Cheap Gas/Avoid 347
You can kill two birds with one stone: avoiding 347 on your way to the Northern State (going to the city), while fueling up at one of the cheaper gas stations in the area.
Directions:
Take 25A West from Stony Brook
Right on Edgewood (Mirabelle Restaurant across the street)
WAIT. HERE IS WHERE YOU GET THE GAS. On the righthand corner of Edgewood and 25 (not 25A), before you turn, there's a Pit Stop with really cheap (relatively) gas.
Right on 25 (congratulations, you have just avoided Smithtown!!)
Left on Old Willets Path--take it to the end, which spills onto 347, as it is turning into Northern State. Now, there's nothing but highway between you and the City!!
Hope that wasn't too confusing. It's a really, really nice feeling avoiding 347.

I live in the Smithtwon area and, in fact, take Old Willets every day to get to work on Vets. Highway. While I do understand the ordeal of 347, I have to say that it really depends on your luck and the time of the day that you're travelling. 347 is a nice option for you if it's at late evening/night. Old Willets can be a pain during school hours. And as far as gas, I would think that driving at a higher gear is more economical than at a lower one. old Willets is 30 mph ... 347 is 55 mph ... so at a good time, 347 may be better. As far as filling in cheap gas, you're absolutely right --- 347 is more expensive. In fact, I found a couple of $2.49-ers on Vets highway (near where it cuts the LIE). Cheers!
thought-provoking, mootable pv. just my thoughts, well anyways gl & be chipper is what i say
