Start from the Bottom

There are a number of Japanese options in the area, but I'd like to start with where not to go: Hoshi, on Stony Brook Road and 347. I've never had a truly good meal there. What annoys me when I walk in is that all the waitresses are dolled up in kimonos, which is a surefire sign that the restaurant is trying too hard to appear authentic. The sushi is a mere approximation of the real deal, and SBS tells me that their Chicken Yaki Udon is sub-par. I generally find their preparations overseasoned and the fish not exactly fresh; in short, everything is just a little off. If you want convenience to SB, try Ichi on 25A (details to come in a later posting).

There's a little place in Smithtown called Shiki - great sushi & tempura.
Plenty of parking in the back.
I completely disagree. Hoshi Sushi is my favorite sushi place near Stony Brook, and I have had many delicious, fresh sushi meals here. I prefer it to Sushi Ishi, which is overpriced, with an inflexible sushi chef (who will prepare ONLY what's on their smallish, never-changing menu). The staff at Hoshi are, by contrast, very efficient, friendly, and flexible.
My only complaint about Hoshi Sushi is that the service is too attentive (one after another of the servers keeps interrupting conversation to top off glasses, etc.). For that reason I often get takeout.
For the absolute best in the area, try Kotobuki at the intersection of 111 and 347 in Hauppauge (near Comp USA).
I also like Hoshi Sushi. I have eaten there many times and it has always been very good. I have also been to Sushi Ishi and I wasn't impressed.
I must disagree with you about Hoshi. Evreytime I go there the food is of the best quality. It is by far the best deal in the area for a good meal. I've been to many sushi bars in the city and this is more than on par with any of the city restuarants.
I will also jump on the Hoshi Sushi defense wagon. I visited many a sushi bar in the city that had inferior sushi. Without trying to be rude, SB Spy, you can't seriously recommend Empire Szechuan's sushi over this. The fish is fresh, the atmosphere and decor are great, only thing I don't like there is thir choice of music (Celine Dion, etc...) and on a funny note, we had a waitress confess to us she hates it too, when she heard us mumble about it. Try the Chirashi next time you go there, you may change your mind.
Are we talking about the same restaurant? Hoshi in Stony Brook is consistently good. My wife & I dine there once a week.
I also really like Hoshi Sushi! We have been going there at least a couple of times a month since we moved to the area 2 years ago and have always had a good experience. They are also very child friendly :)
I have to agree with all those that have disagreed. My husband and I have been going to hoshi for a number of years and it seems every year they get better and better and what impresses me most is they know who their valued customers are very accomodating. we have small children who do not eat sushi or anything but typical kid fair and they are fine with us bringing other food in. Seems to me that taht are pretty secure in their quality and service.
