Tough Love

I just had an unsettling interaction with the people from One if Buy Bagel. I was just trying to confirm with them whether their bagels were steamed or boiled, and the manager was suspicious and unfriendly throughout our short conversation, and eventually hung up on me. He wouldn't even tell me the information, but I'm sure they're steamed.

I think he was ashamed to admit they're steamed, because most bagels connoisseurs prefer the old way, boiled. Be that as it may, I am completely obsessed with the steamed creations at OIBB, particularly the sesame and poppyseed. They are gigantic, tasty bagels--meals unto themselves, really. They also make good sandwiches for lunch, and there's always a sandwich on special.

So I'm going to ignore the rudeness that I just experienced and wholeheartedly recommend this place.

One other thing: the name of the place is ridiculous and lame, but don't let that prevent you from coming in. In fact, I think it's one of the most popular places around. The lines are out the door many weekends.

On Bennets Road and 25A, just east of Nicolls Rd.

The reason the lines are out the door is because this store does not have enough help. I waited 10 minutes one day just to get a buttered bagel.

The help they do have is not very good either.

"One If Buy Bagel," Shame on them! Treating a customer rudely on the phone is no excuse! I would have been "steamed" AND "boiled" enough to give up their sesame and poppyseed bagels!

Great bagels! Lines running out the door on weekend mornings is the sign of a good bagel place. It's not the number of people that are the problem, it's all of the special orders being taken (eggs, bacon,....) and the amount of time it takes to handle that. Each one of those orders ties up an employee for several minutes. This is typical for this type of store. I have waited outside many different stores around Long Island during the last few decades in the many towns I have lived in. Kudos to OIBB for tasty bagels that are the size of a child's head. Also, make sure you try the sunflower bagels. They are great.

Hmmm... yeah, sometimes they're slow, but usually they're friendly. And, truth be told, GREAT bagels.
