Trader Joe's

If you are looking for a place to get some food where the labels are different than the supermarket, go to Trader Joe's on Alexander Ave. in Lake Grove. They have the best guacamole I have ever tasted and it only costs $3. They claim it has 5+ avocados in it. You can't make it for this price. Another item you may find useful is the 100% Cranberry Juice, a must for all those who get urinary track infections. The cranberry juice in the regular supermarket is mostly apple, pear or grape juice and sugar. It is very hard to find 100% pure cranberry. This juice is potent and you may find you have to dilute it, but for hard core infections drink the bottle straight. Another item you may want to look at here is the wild salmon. Of course, we never know if any salmon is wild or if the store is just joshing. A recent NY Times article claimed 90% of the merchants were selling farm raised salmon as wild. So therefore, you might as well buy the cheapest one, which at Trader Joe is $5.99 per pound (a great buy if it is wild). Cat cookies taste good and are low in fat, so you can eat alot of them. But since they are small, it is easy to down the whole container, so I guess it doesn't matter how low fat they are. You might as well get the Trader Joe sandwich cookie which taste good and has more fat (but unhydrogenated). Trader Joe has great chocolate and the price is cheap. You can get Belgian chocolate here for like $3 for a gigantic bar. The chocolate rasberry sticks are good and so are the chocolate raisins, nuts, etc. You can buy good tomato sauce in the can ($l.79) which goes a long way. The 100% whole wheat pasta tastes just like the regular pasta and only costs $.99 for one pound. The imported gourmet pasta is good tasting and cheaper than if you bought it at an Italian market ($l.49 a lb.).

Make sure you don't look like too much of a slob when you go there because you are bound to see Stony Brook faculty or someone else you know.

Don't forget the orange juice! A whole half gallon for only $2.29, that alone makes it worth the trip...

ok...not to be picky...but it's a "urinary tracT infection"...and it's best not mentioned in a food post. Otherwise...you're totally right. I love TJ!
