Forget Ebay: Shop Here

There are some people who like to look trendy. They go to the mall and get ripped off buying a piece of clothing they most likely will wear once and throw away. Then there are the people who can create. The people who are secure enough in their own self to dress as they wish have an eye for putting together different varieties of stuff and don’t like to pay a lot for doing so. These are the people who shop at North Shore Thrift. North Shore Thrift is located in Port Jefferson Station.
You can take the S60 bus, from either the University or 25A, that will leave you right on the corner. North Shore Thrift has a huge inventory of all kinds of clothes, shoes, books, house wears, etc. Everyday there is a color displayed and if the item you want has that color on the tag, the item is 50% off. You can find great deals here. I recently purchased a Lands End fleece jacket, like new, for $1.99. I have also purchased New Balance Sneakers for $3.99. The nice part about the clothes here is that they have been already worn and washed so there is no surprise shrinkage when you wash them. It is great for people who want to find that broken in tee shirt or jeans, people who cross-dress, people who have big bottoms and small tops or vice versa. You can go on a shopping spree here and walk out paying less than $20. Sunday is a good day to go because they have double colors. Plan on spending a few hours here. They also have great dishes for those who don’t care about matching.

Mather Hospital Thrift Shore is a totally enjoyable experience. The old people who work there are a sight in themselves. They dress with aprons and treat you very kindly. The nice part of this thrift shop is that you know the funds are going to a good cause, the hospital. So why not go on a shopping spree here, to keep this great shop going and help those in the hospital? This shop is located in an old house. The steps and upstairs floors are crooked but the atmosphere is so warm and enjoyable. You just want to spend money here. I often want to give more than these little old ladies are asking. My favorite items here are the kitchen ware. I recently saw a brand new Cuisinart food processor for $5.00. I know this item costs over $100 and probably over $200 in Williams Sonoma. I have bought kitchen clocks, dishes, forks and knives for practically nothing. The men’s clothing is good and so are the large bags. If you need a large suitcase kind of bag, check this place out. Located next to Mather Hospital, Port Jefferson Station. If you take the S60 to Northshore Thrift you can walk down North Country Road to this shop, about ¼ of a mile. This is a great way to spend the day.

Op Shop - We must all go to the Op Shop. The Op Shop is located on Christian Avenue in Stony Brook next to the Methodist Church. The Op Shop is a little cottage-type house that is very cute, cozy, and filled to the brim with all kinds of goodies. The ladies greet you at the door with a smile and are so willing to help. The Op Shop has the best prices in all the thrift shops because the old ladies who work there haven’t raised the prices in 20 years. There is a standard one price for shirts, pants, etc., so if you find a great Ralph Lauren shirt you still pay the standard $1.99. The Op Shop is small but packed with all kinds of great stuff. They also have a semi annual $3.00 bag sale where you can fill an entire grocery bag with clothes for $3.00. I have seen numerous new items come through this shop from stores in Stony Brook such as Talbots and Ann Taylor at a fraction of the price. In addition, the Op Shop frequently puts out free items in front of their door in the back (parking lot side) that you can take at any time, even when they're closed.

If you just keep in mind that the funds here are going to a good cause, then you won’t mind paying a slight bit more in thrift at the Good Will and won’t mind shopping in a regular store instead of a cute house. They have a color system here also, with items l/2 off during the week. On Sundays you can purchase an item that corresponds to the color for 99 cents. The Goodwill has a lot of new stuff., especially from Target. You pay a bit more for the items, but they are new. The Goodwill is located in Selden on Route 25. I haven’t researched the bus route yet, but I’ll let you know. There is a lot of clothing here, so plan on spending some time.

The things that are outside the OpShop by the door are DONATIONS that have been left by people in the community to be sold. NOT free items to take when they are closed.

The items by the BACK door are the donations. The items put out by the FRONT door are free (there is a sign that says "free"), but there are not things there all the time.
